Adam Carter, 47, was charged with attempted murder after attacking another man outside the Excalibur Hotel and Casino around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim was slashed with a steak knife with a 6-inch blade, police said.

The incident began when the victim and his wife were walking across a footbridge and Carter happened to ask the man for some water. When the man appeared to ignore Carter, the suspect slashed him with the knife.

The victim suffered lacerations to his liver and gallbladder and was lying on the sidewalk when Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers arrived.

Was operated on and treated in intensive care

He was taken to University Hospital. According to Las Vegas television station KSNV, doctors performed surgery and he was taken to the intensive care unit.

Updated information on the victim's condition was not immediately available.

The victim was not identified, but police said he was older than 60.

The sidewalk where the attack occurred runs between the New York-New York Hotel & Casino and the Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

Carter was arrested shortly after the stabbing. He was found outside the Shake Shack, located inside the New York-New York Casino. The knife was found on a nearby street.

When officers spoke to Carter, he uttered phrases such as “Someone is going to kill me” and “They're coming after me.” Before the stabbing, he had smoked methamphetamine (meth) and drank some alcohol, KSNV reported.

Carter was booked and lodged at the Clark County Detention Center, where he remained as of this weekend. No bail has been set.

Carter did not allow officers to transport him to a local courthouse on Tuesday and Thursday.

Later in the week, Judge Elana Lee Graham ordered Carter to appear in court on Monday “by any means necessary.”

Tourist commentary

Visitors to the Las Vegas Strip told Las Vegas television station KLAS that the stabbing was frightening.

It’s kind of unbelievable, a little scary,” Chad Numrich said in a statement to KLAS. “Just because it could be anyone.”

“Honestly, it can happen anywhere,” Laura Calk added to the TV station. “And we just have to be a little careful.”

“When you come here, you have to be careful,” Becky Flores also told KLAS.

Carter was also charged in connection with an earlier incident. He damaged property at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and received a suspended sentence last month, KLAS reported. He will pay compensation to the hospital.
