The Berkeley Fire Department took two drivers to Highland Hospital after a collision on Marin Circle in the Berkeley Hills on Saturday, authorities say.

The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. when a driver appeared to have lost control while going down the hill on Marin Avenue, said Acting BFD Battalion Chief DeJuan Turner.

The driver drove through Marin Circle, missed the fountain and ended up on his side, BFD said, according to preliminary information.

Details were few, but it is believed the driver hit another vehicle during the crash.

The Berkeley Fire Department had to extricate an elderly man from the vehicle, which lost control, Turner said.

After stabilizing the vehicle, they were able to carry the driver out through one of his car doors.

BFD took the man to Highland Hospital with “Code 3” lights and sirens.

The other driver was also taken to Highland Hospital, the regional trauma center.

BPD issued a Nixle Alert just before 1:25 p.m., asking people to “avoid the area” of Marin Circle “until further notice.”

BPD said it is actively investigating the collision and has closed several streets as a result.

TBS has reached out to BPD for more information. This story will be updated as more details become available.

Update, October 5, 5:25 p.m BPD said details are still limited due to the ongoing investigation, but it is believed a 73-year-old driver was driving in circles with a 41-year-old driver and the bollards during the crash. Both drivers complained of pain. Further details were initially not known.
