Investigators learned there were more than 30 cats living on the property in “various conditions,” police said.

COVENTRY, Conn. – Coventry police arrested a man Thursday as part of an animal cruelty investigation after they said over 30 cats were recovered from a home.

Derek VanDoren of Coventry is charged with animal cruelty and is expected in court Oct. 9. Police said he was released on a no-surety bond.

Police said an investigation was launched after a community service officer received a report of an “overflow” of cats at a home on Carpenter Road.

Investigators learned there were more than 30 cats living on the property in “various conditions,” police said.

Police said a good Samaritan helped capture the cats and remove them from the home before a veterinarian examined and treated them.
