Chennai: The Scenic East Coast Road (ECR) was a silent witness to a double tragedy on Saturday afternoon – one of which was the death of a 20 years old One girl had a bicycle accident, and the other, which occurred within 30 minutes, was the death of her distraught college friend, who jumped in front of a speeding bus and killed himself.
Police said S. Yogeshwaran, 20, of Uthiramerur, was riding pillion bike with his friend E. Sabarina, 20, of Madurantakam. Both were third-year engineering students at Padalam near Chengalpet and were returning to college after visiting Mamallapuram. Around 12.30 pm, a Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus en route from Chennai to Puducherry hit her bike from behind at Poonjeri village junction on the ECR.
While Sabarina fell and came under the wheels of the bus, Yogeshwaran was thrown off the bike due to the impact. Quoting eyewitnesses, police said Yogeshwaran picked himself up and sat next to the motionless body of Sabarina for a few minutes. He then picked her up and took her in a helpful autorickshaw to a hospital about 500 meters from the accident site. He apparently had the impression that she had fainted due to injuries and would come back to life.
However, when the doctors declared her dead within five minutes, he stopped for a few minutes and went out. As doctors and others discussed how to contact the girl's family, he ran toward the busy ticket booth and jumped in front of a bus heading from Chennai to Puducherry. He was knocked down and died on the spot.
Police said the two youths studied together at school and then went to the same engineering college. They took different majors at the same college.
Police sent the bodies to a government hospital in Mamallapuram for autopsy. Mamallapuram police registered two separate cases and arrested PRTC drivers Paramasivam and Arumugam for negligent driving. Further investigations are ongoing.
