81-year-old woman drives vehicle into Canton restaurant, killing man

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Canton man died after an 81-year-old woman crashed her car into a restaurant Friday, pinning him against the counter.

Andrew Grossmidt, 69, of Canton died around 11:55 a.m., according to a release from the Jackson Township Police Department. Authorities said Barbara O'Donnell, of Canal Fulton, pinned Grossmidt between her vehicle and the counter with her gray 2018 Toyota Rav-4.

The incident occurred at Angello's 2 Go, a restaurant at 5081 Fulton Drive NW in Canton.

Firefighters freed Grossmidt and transported him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

O'Donnell was attempting to park when the accident occurred. “She advised officers that she thought she was pressing the brake pedal, but in reality she still had her foot on the accelerator,” the statement said.

Charges are pending against O'Donnell, but police have not said what they are.

Grossmidt's granddaughter was at the scene but was not involved in the accident, according to police.

O'Donnell was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities said alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.
