Pedestrians hit by taxi in Glasgow Central incident

Emergency services attended the scene and two women, aged 60 and 61, and the male taxi driver, aged 62, were taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. A 61-year-old woman was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and a 50-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Gordon Street was closed at Union Street, while Renfield Street was closed at St Vincent Street.

An eyewitness said: “Huge response from emergency services. It looks like a taxi has pulled onto the pavement right in front of Tesco Express. Several people injured.”

Another told the Glasgow Times: “It's terrible, just chaos.”

“We were on the way to Silverburn and heard a taxi hit some people. The tents were put up very quickly.”

Big Issue salesman Geoffrey Hing told our sister: “Suddenly the taxi came flying around the corner and onto the pavement. People were hit. It was terrible.”

“I've only seen something like that on TV, not in real life. Not during my entire time in Glasgow.”

Pictures from the scene of the accident show several emergency vehicles in action, the area is cordoned off, shields and tents have been set up.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Emergency services are currently responding to Union Street at the junction with Gordon Street following a road traffic collision.”

“Gordon Street at Union Street is closed, as is Renfield Street at St Vincent Street.

“Motorists and the public are asked to avoid the area.”

Sergeant Christopher Hoggans, of Road Policing, said: “Our inquiries are ongoing to find out exactly what happened.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact us with any information they may have. I would also ask anyone with recording equipment to review the footage as it may assist us in our ongoing investigation.”
