Key details that led to the glamorous au pair and her boss being arrested for a double murder in a $1 million Virginia mansion

The husband of a woman found stabbed to death in a double murder linked to an affair and a fetish website was left destroyed by blood spatter.

Christine Banfield, 37, was found with stab wounds in her bedroom in February 2023 in Herndon, Virginia, along with Joseph Ryan, 39, who was shot.

Her husband, Brendan Banfield, was indicted last month in her death and charged with four counts of aggravated murder.

The couple lived in their $1 million home with their four-year-old daughter and 24-year-old au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes, who was also charged with murder.

Banfield and Magalhaes, who were allegedly having an affair at the time, claimed they arrived and saw Ryan attacking Christine and both shot him.

However, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Clingan revealed in court that analysis of the blood spatter showed the bodies had been moved.

He said police received “two final reports” in August from experienced forensic investigators who spent more than a year reviewing evidence.

Clingan said the reports were fundamental to prosecutors' theory that the bodies of Ryan and Christine Banfield were moved and repositioned after their fatal injuries.

Clingan also said Ryan's arms were moved and smeared with the woman's blood.

John Carroll, Brendan Banfield's attorney, argued in court that Clingan's account of what happened was not evidence that the husband killed his wife.

“It just doesn’t add up, Judge,” he said.

At the end of the hearing, Fairfax Circuit Presiding Judge Penney S. Azcarate denied Banfield bail and requested that the defendant remain in the county jail until his trial scheduled for February.

The blood spatter evidence is part of officers' extensive investigation into Banfield and Magalhães, who were arrested last October and will stand trial in November.

Authorities said the killings were part of a larger plan between Magalhães and Banfield, with whom officials allegedly began a romantic relationship in August 2022.

In the six months before the murders, Magalhães and Banfield took a trip to New York City together and took romantic photos, Clingan said.

The prosecutor also said other women informed investigators that Banfield had been involved in several extramarital affairs during his marriage.

“Several credible women have confirmed this fact, including one in particular who told them that during the course of her affair with this defendant several years ago, he continually promised to leave his wife,” he said.

“Finally he said to her, 'It would be a lot easier for us if she wasn't there.'”

Prosecutors said Magalhães called 911 at least twice within minutes of each other on the day of the murders, but ended the calls before speaking to first responders.

More than 10 minutes later, prosecutors alleged in court, Magalhães called 911 one last time and reported the emergency.

Banfield then spoke into the phone and said he shot a man because he stabbed his wife.

Police soon arrived at the Banfields' home and discovered that Ryan had been fatally shot and Christine was suffering from stab wounds. She was taken to hospital where she died.

Magalhaes told police she left the family home to take the child to the zoo but returned when she realized she had left her lunch.

She said she left the child in the basement after she and Banfield heard what sounded like an intruder before discovering Christine being attacked.

When Magalhães and Banfield went inside, the two found Ryan holding a knife to Christine's throat, Magalhães told investigators.

Banfield, an Internal Revenue Service trooper, told police he took his service weapon and shot and injured Ryan.

He told police that he then ordered Peres Magalhaes to grab another gun and shoot him again, which she did, allegedly killing him.

Preliminary prosecutors said the evidence pointed to a very different story and suggested Ryan was shot as part of a plan to get rid of Christine.

Investigators first became suspicious of Magalhaes' story after she and Banfield failed to disclose their alleged romance when speaking to detectives.

Police said they found evidence of a lovers' secret elopement and indicated that Magalhaes moved into the master bedroom just eight months after the murders.

They submitted a picture that showed a framed photo of Magalhaes and Banfield on her nightstand and their clothes in Christine's closet.

Prosecutors allege someone created a fake account for Christine on a BDSM site and planned to have “rough sex” with Ryan before they were both killed.

It emerged in court that the fetish website account Ryan had been using to send messages was managed on Christine's computer under the username Annastasia9.

However, there is “not a shred of evidence that she is interested in knife play, bondage or BDSM,” said prosecutor Eric Clingan.

Ryan and the account user discussed rough sex and blood play, an act in which someone intentionally cuts another.

During the chats, Annastasia9 wrote that she cheats on her husband “whenever she wants.”

Ryan told a friend that Christine's marriage was not entirely monogamous, adding that Brendan Banfield was aware of “his wife's extramarital activities,” Clingan said.

Prosecutors also pointed to a 10-minute delay between Magalhaes' first 911 call and his last call.

During Magalhães' court hearings, prosecutors also argued that Ryan was not known to be violent.

In the 11 months between Magalhães' arrest and Banfield's indictment, authorities say they monitored her phone calls in the Fairfax County Jail.

Clingan said Magalhães and Banfield had a brief phone conversation in which she said: “I hope you don't just stay with me because you're afraid I'll turn against you.”

In announcing the new charges against Brendan Banfield, FairFax District Attorney Steve Descano said: “On February 24, 2023, I stood in the middle of a cul-de-sac in Fairfax County and described the deaths of two people in an apartment building.

“Now, 570 days later, we know that the deaths of Joseph Ryan and Christine Banfield were indeed murders.”
