The Elizabethton High School Band, two-time Division II state champion, kicked off its season with band camp this week. 155 students braved the elements, including high temperatures, high humidity and frequent rain showers and thunderstorms that turned band director Jonathan Valentine into a part-time meteorologist.

The work and diligence of the state champions was on display this week as they battled through the 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. days. Valentine spoke about the effort and diligence it takes to be a member of the Betsy Band. “It takes tremendous effort and dedication to be in the band because you need a lot of muscle memory to create an 8-minute show from scratch! It takes hard work, dedication and a willingness for students to push themselves beyond what they think they can do,” Valentine said.

Camp also allows band members to build chemistry and make friendships that last beyond performances. Additionally, it gives the band time to work in a large freshman class. “At band camp, we hope to get to know each other and set expectations for the year. The student leaders are great at it, and even though it's hot and long, they always have a ton of fun. We have some of the best students in the country, and they've worked hard to learn the first 2:00 of the show already!” Valentine explained.

This year the band camp lasts until July 31st.
