Video of Francis Ford Coppola kissing extras on Megalopolis set emerges after allegations of inappropriate behavior

In May, director Francis Ford Coppola was accused of attempting to kiss extras on the set of Megalopolis. Now a video has surfaced that appears to show him doing so, as Variety details in a report.

Variety has obtained two videos in which Coppola appears to walk through a bacchanalian nightclub scene, approaching several extras dancing on the set in minimal clothing, and touching and kissing them.

This seems to confirm a report by the Guardian from earlier this year, which described this exact scenario, among other inappropriate behavior:

Several sources also suggested that Coppola could be “old-fashioned” in his behavior toward women, including pulling women onto his lap. And during a bacchanalian nightclub scene shot for the film, witnesses say Coppola came onto the set and attempted to kiss some of the topless and scantily clad female extras, apparently claiming he was “trying to get them in the mood.”

In an interview with Variety today, two sources said that Coppola “seemed to act with impunity on set” and that “none of the traditional checks and balances” were in place to prevent inappropriate behavior because he financed the $120 million film himself.

“Because Coppola was the financing guy, there was no human resources department to keep an eye on things,” one of the sources told the publication. “Who were they supposed to talk to? Complain to Coppola and report Coppola himself?”

Variety confirms that the scene in the released videos featured actresses who were “cleared for topless nudity” and others who were “cleared for scantily clad.” A source told the publication that there were between 150 and 200 people on set at the time, and the report states that while there were two intimacy coordinators working on the film, neither of them asked to be on set for this scene.

According to the source, while filming the scene, Coppola repeatedly got up to hug and kiss women on set until he accidentally ended up in the shot and ruined the footage. The source added that Coppola eventually got a microphone and said to the room, “I'm sorry if I come up to you and kiss you. I need you to know that it's just for my pleasure.”

In a statement to Variety, executive producer Darren Demetre said: “Over two days, we shot a celebratory Studio 54-style club scene, with Francis walking around the set to convey the spirit of the scene by giving the cast and extras friendly hugs and kisses on the cheek. In this way, he helped inspire and create the club atmosphere that was so important to the film. I was not aware of any complaints of harassment or bad behavior during the project.”

Demetre's statement appears to be identical to the one he gave to IGN when the allegations first surfaced in May. IGN has reached out to Coppola and Megalopolis for comment. This news comes just two months before the scheduled September 27 release of Megalopolis, which premiered at Cannes to coincide with the Guardian's initial report.
