James Cameron says he may not direct Avatar 4 and 5

While the world awaits the premiere in December, Avatar: The Way of Water, It is the sequel to James Cameron's most successful film of all time, and now news has emerged that Cameron may not direct the other two planned films in the series himself.

“The User image “Films themselves are pretty busy,” Cameron tells Empire in an interview. “I'm developing some other exciting things as well. I think at some point – I don't know if it's after three or four – I'll want to pass the baton to a director I trust so I can do other things that interest me. Or maybe not. I don't know.”

However, his enthusiasm for the upcoming films is great.

“Everything I need to say about family, sustainability, climate, nature and the issues that are important to me in real life and in my film life, I can express on this screen,” Cameron said. “The further I got, the more excited I got. Movie four is a blast. It's awesome. I really hope I can do it. But that depends on market forces. Part three is in the can, so it's definitely coming out. I really hope we can do parts four and five, because ultimately it's a big story.”

Cameron had previously hired Robert Rodriguez to direct Alita: Battle Angel, a film he had long wanted to adapt for the screen and which fans of the graphic novel on which it is based had hoped he would direct. Cameron was too busy with the User image films, but remained on board as executive producer and co-writer.

Avatar: The Way of Water Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, it follows the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their children), the problems that haunt them, the lengths they go to protect each other, the battles they face for survival, and the tragedies they endure.

The sequel also stars Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Oona Chaplin and Jermaine Clement.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theaters worldwide on December 16, 2022.
