Regional Covid-19 rates in London and East England at pre-Christmas levels

As the latest figures show, Covid-19 case numbers in two regions of England are at their lowest level since before Christmas.

In London, the seven-day rate on January 15 was 703.7 cases per 100,000 people – down from 1,053.4 the previous week and the lowest since the seven-day rate reached December 19.

East of England currently has a seven-day rate of 526.8, down from 763.5 and the lowest since December 20.

In addition, tariffs are falling in all municipal districts in both regions.

Seven-day rates continue to decline week-on-week across all regions in England, although some areas are falling faster than others.

In the south-east of England, the rate currently stands at 503.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 701.7 the previous week and the lowest since December 26.

In the south-west of England, the week-on-week decline is smaller, from 401.3 to 343.2 – the lowest level since January 1.

The figures, calculated by the PA news agency using data from the British health service Public Health England, suggest that the nationwide lockdown imposed in England on January 5 is having an effect.

In the Midlands and the north of England, regional rates did not rise as much in the second half of December as in the south and east of England.

For this reason, the week-on-week decline in interest rates is not quite as sharp in these regions.

In the East Midlands, the rate fell from 478.1 in the seven days to 8 January to 402.8 in the seven days to 15 January, and in the West Midlands it fell from 647.8 to 571.9.

The North East of England currently stands at 335.2 (compared to the same period last year). In Yorkshire & the Humber the incidence is 259.1 (compared to the same period last year). This figure is therefore lower than in Yorkshire (compared to the same period last year).

In the north-west of England the rate fell from 646.4 to 528.6.
