Ryan Reynolds said he co-wrote a 'Deadpool' Christmas movie that got 'lost in the hustle and bustle' of the Disney-Fox merger

  • Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he was involved in the script of a “Deadpool” Christmas movie.

  • The actor told Big Issue that the film was “lost in the hustle and bustle” of the Disney-Fox merger, which was completed in 2019.

  • Reynolds also shared that he still hopes the film will one day be released in theaters.

Ryan Reynolds said he was involved in the script of a “Deadpool” Christmas movie, but it was never made because of Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

In an interview with Big Issue's Steven Mackenzie published on Saturday, the actor revealed that he started writing a Christmas film starring the violent and sarcastic antihero four years ago.

When Reynolds, who stars alongside Will Ferrell in the recently released Christmas musical “Spirited,” was asked if musical numbers could make other of his films better, he was candid about the film.

“I would love to see a song and dance number in a 'Deadpool' movie. Four years ago [‘Deadpool’ co-writers] “Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and I wrote a Christmas movie starring 'Deadpool.' But the movie got lost in the chaos of Disney's takeover of Fox and was never made,” he said.

The Disney-Fox merger was completed in March 2019, according to Insider's Travis Clark, with Disney acquiring the majority of Fox's assets in a $71.3 billion deal.

Reynolds added that he still has hope that the film will one day hit the big screen – even if there is no singing or dancing.

“Maybe we can do that movie one day. It's not a musical, it's a full-on Deadpool Christmas movie. So one day.”

Disney representatives did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

“Someday” may be further away than it sounds. A third “Deadpool” film, also co-written by Reynolds, Reese and Wernick, is already in the works and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2024. Reynolds said in an interview with SiriusXM's “The Jess Cagle Show” on Nov. 8 that he will no longer play the character after the film ends.

“I'm going to be working on Deadpool for the next two years,” Reynolds said when asked about the next installment in the franchise. “That's it. Just this one movie.”

Insider's Kirsten Acuna reported that the news came as a shock to fans who have been dying to see Deadpool interact with Marvel characters. Disney acquired the rights to use the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool in Marvel films when it merged with Fox.
