Netflix fans praise “best horror zombie series” for its huge cliffhanger

Missing the flesh-eating atmosphere of The Walking Dead? You're in luck: Netflix fans are recommending Black Summer, the platform's “best horror zombie series” – and it has a major cliffhanger.

It feels like many moons have passed since we've had a good zombie horror story to sink our teeth into. The Walking Dead is over and The Last of Us season 2 is still a long way off. Horror movies aren't delivering on their promises either, opting instead for death at the hands of serial killers or crazed clowns.

However, Netflix users are convinced that the best zombie series has been right under our noses all this time, and it's all thanks to Black Summer. The series, which first aired in 2019, is set in the Z Nation universe and follows a special forces team during the apocalypse.

“Black Summer has to be one of the best zombie shows I’ve seen in a long time,” posted one fan on X/Twitter.

“Three episodes of Black Summer and this shit is some of the best zombie apocalypse content I've ever seen,” said a second.

“I will never forgive Netflix for cancelling Black Summer. The best zombie show I've ever seen and it ended on such a huge cliffhanger,” added a third.

“Black Summer on Netflix was amazing. Season 2 had some of the most realistic gunplay ever put on screen,” said another.

Here's the downside – Black Summer was half-heartedly canceled by Netflix and a third season never materialized. Season 2 aired in 2021 and ended on an absolutely huge cliffhanger.

It was originally hinted that Black Summer Season 3 would return in August 2023… but that didn’t happen.

Another fan complained: “Why cancel Black Summer? Best TV show.”

“Are we ever going to get a season 3 of Black Summer?” a fifth fan chimed in.

And one said: “Just heard that Netflix didn't renew Black Summer for a third season. Such bummer. Season 1 was solid but season 2 was a masterpiece. Fuck you Netflix.”

When season 2 was released, actors like Jamie King hoped to return for a third installment.

Speaking to ComicBook.com at the time, she explained: “Oh God, I don't know if I'm allowed to say this. Hypothetically, I would focus it on different chapters where we explore three central characters in different places. But those are just – I don't know, sketches.”

Nevertheless, there are still two great seasons of the zombie madness to watch. The TV series is currently available on the streaming service and can be watched in one go.

Other Netflix updates include Virgin River Season 6, Heartstopper Season 3, and Emily in Paris Season 4. You can also find new TV shows streaming.
