Fraudsters use AI to target love seekers on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and love is definitely in the air. But this romantic season also attracts the scammers. Federal authorities are sounding the alarm about the growing presence of online romance scams, many of which are becoming more sophisticated due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI). This year, exchanging affection on dating apps could result in heartbreak—or worse, financial ruin.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, people were defrauded of a total of $1.3 billion through romance scams in 2022. Demetrius Hardeman, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, warned individuals of the dangers lurking behind online personas, stating, “Valentine's Day is a timely reminder to the public not to fall for criminals who are using romance scams to trick their way through…”
