A savvy shopper has revealed her ingenious trick for saving money before the holiday season.

Christmas can be an expensive time for families, with presents and lots of food to buy.

But a Dunnes Stores customer told us how she is preparing for Christmas with a clever money-saving trick.

Irish mum Michelle, who goes by @alyssasfamilyadventure on TikTok, has explained how she is using the money from the new deposit return scheme to her advantage.

Michelle explained the ingenious hack to her followers as follows: “Here’s a little money-saving trick for you.

“We’re going down to Dunnes today, returning our bottles and cans and getting our money back.

“We got a gift card from Dunnes and every time we return our bottles and cans we go to the till with our receipt and the girl puts the money on our gift card.

“We will continue to do this to save money for our Christmas shopping.”

Christmas savings hack. When you return all your bottles and cans to get your deposit back, ask if you can get a gift card for the shop you do your groceries at. The hack went viral on TikTok and was viewed over 334,000 times on the platform.

Other smart shoppers have shared their own money-saving tips in the comments.

One viewer wrote: “I have about 8 black bags full of bottles and cans in the shed at home that the children helped with. I will cash them in before our vacation and the children will pocket the money for the vacation.”
