Ed Sheeran's “Under The Tree: Christmas” is the number one contender from Richard Curtis' Netflix film “That Christmas”

“Under The Tree” comes from Richard Curtis’ upcoming animated Netflix Christmas film “That Christmas” and is likely Ed’s first new material since 2023’s “Autumn Variations,” which topped the official album charts last October.

Having already landed two official Christmas number one singles in the UK – “Perfect” in 2017 and “Sausage Rolls For Everyone”, composed by LadBaby and Elton John in 2021 – he is now hoping for a third hit with the track from Curtis' soon-to-be “Christmas classic”.

Ed explained the origins of the song: “I've been friends with Richard Curtis for years and we've done a lot of great charity work. We were both heavily involved in the film Yesterday.

“He came to me two years ago to play me the rough cut of That Christmas. It was just sketches and voices, but it blew me away. So emotional and yet so heartwarmingly funny, like all of Richard Curtis' films.

“The scene we wrote this song for is so heartbreaking, but also so real for many people who spend Christmas without their loved ones for so many reasons.”

“I got to work on it with my older brother, which is a rarity and a gift to work so closely with my only sibling. It felt so good to create something that my children would watch with their uncle, set in the country where they live.

“I think it's a shame there aren't more animated Christmas movies for kids, but this one is going to be a staple of the holidays, at least in our household. I hope everyone loves it and enjoys the song, we had so much fun making it.”

In “That Christmas,” Brian Cox plays Santa Claus, Fiona Shaw plays Ms. Trapper, Jodie Whittaker plays Mrs. Williams and Bill Nighy plays Bill; all residents of a picturesque British seaside town whose lives are turned upside down one Christmas.
