30 Hilarious Flirty Memes to Get Your Crush's Attention…

Whether you're currently in a committed relationship with your crush or trying your luck at winning them over, it's important to master your flirting game. The truth is, flirting with someone special can be pretty nerve-wracking. But it's good for your health, writes Barbara Field in a 2023 post for VeryWellMind (1).

Not only does flirting boost self-esteem and improve communication, it also reduces physiological stress and makes us feel sexier. Flirting is the kind of outlet we need to express our pent-up emotions and let a significant other know we're interested – albeit in a simple, subtle way.

Did you know that there is an International Flirting Day?

Flirting Day is celebrated every year on February 18th. A few days after Valentine's Day, singles finally have the chance to go out and meet people. It's the perfect time to flex those romantic muscles, even if you're still far from building a real relationship.

According to Parmita Uniyal's 2024 article in Hindustan Times, Flirt Day is all about giving yourself a chance to connect with others (2). It is part of the wider 'Anti-Valentine's Day Week' and encourages even desperate singles to get in the mood for love.

Why is flirting so difficult for us?

There is a lot of pressure involved in getting someone special to pay attention to you and return your feelings. Pressure that comes with its own insecurities and fears. In general, no one wants to feel rejected, and flirting mistakes are rooted in this fear of rejection, explains “flirtologist” Jane Smith in her book “Flirtology: Stop Swiping, Start Talking, and Find Love” (3).

When it comes to dating or flirting, people tend to compare themselves to others to see if they're “good enough,” “valuable enough,” or even “attractive enough,” Smith adds. But here's the problem: The delicate comparison of your own worth negatively impacts your flirting game and makes you stutter more than usual.

The best way to improve your flirting skills is to acknowledge your personal issues so they don't interfere with your chances of finding love. In a 2023 article for NPR, Andre Limbong and Andre Tagle suggest that to improve your chances of flirting, larger issues of self-acceptance and self-worth are best addressed in your free time rather than in the middle of a relationship (4).

Your self-esteem should not depend on how others react to your advances. Avoid the added pressure of having more fun while flirting – it will make you more attractive.

Can we notice when someone is flirting with us?

In a study conducted by the University of Kansas of 52 couples of single, heterosexual college students, an overwhelming 84% knew exactly when their partner was not flirting with them (5).

The study also showed that only 28% of participants were able to correctly perceive when their partner was flirting with them. This explains why many flirting styles and tricks don't really go down well. In short, we all sense rejection, but are almost blind to opportunities.

When comparing men and women, men are more alert when it comes to recognizing flirtatious behavior in 36% of cases. Women, on the other hand, are generally slower to notice when someone is approaching and make the right decision only in 18% of cases.

Research suggests that women may perceive a man's smile or friendly gestures as merely friendly and nothing special. This may be why many advances are misinterpreted.
