Resident Evil 3 remake art director on Jill Valentine's updated design: Sex appeal “wasn't the right direction”

Speaking to Game Informer for the latest issue's cover story, Cho said that the sex appeal of Jill's original design “didn't go in the right direction” and that her new design reflects “a certain level of practicality.”

“There was a lot of discussion internally about that direction. The original design of Jill Valentine was clearly aimed at sex appeal, but that wasn't the right direction to go. This is a very strong character, and it's a character who goes through a lot of adversity, so we wanted to focus on that and make sure that her clothing had a certain level of believability and practicality.”

In RE3 Remake, Jill's iconic tube top and skirt outfit is replaced with a sleeveless top, undershirt, and long jeans:

Cho also commented on the new design of the Nemesis T-Type, which now has a “body bag”-like look instead of normal clothing.

Cho explained:

“It just felt like more of the same, so we went back to the drawing board. The first thing that struck me was the clothing. It felt strange to create a bioweapon and have it wear clothes. Instead of having him wear clothes, we had him wear something that resembled a body bag, something that gave him the feel of a shackled weapon. At the same time, I wanted to stay true to the original, so the Nemesis silhouette still has that iconic look.”
