Is Colin Farrell the box office magnet he once was?

When was the last time actor Colin Farrell had a hit? Take your time. We're waiting.

Farrell's latest film, the fantasy romance Winter's Tale, flopped when it debuted over Valentine's Day weekend, adding to the Irish actor's long-running string of box office flops. Despite opening in nearly 3,000 theaters across North America, the $60 million drama only grossed a measly $8.1 million at the box office. Ouch.

“Winter's Tale” is Farrell's third film in a row to flop, following “Dead Man Down” (2013) and “Seven Psychopaths” (2012). Farrell hasn't played a major hit since the police film “SWAT” (2003).

In recent years, films featuring the actor in supporting roles (such as the comedy “Kill the Boss,” the animated film “Epic” and the biopic “Saving Mr. Banks”) have typically fared much better. But big-budget blockbusters like the 2012 remake of “Total Recall”? Not so much. Farrell's $125 million sci-fi actioner grossed a disappointing $198 million worldwide.

Farrell rose to fame in 2002 as the antagonist in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Minority Report, in which he starred alongside Tom Cruise. He went on to land a string of high-profile roles in films such as The Recruit, Daredevil, The Big Bang Theory, Alexander, The New World and Miami Vice. With the exception of Oliver Stone's Alexander, Farrell enjoyed great success during this period of his career, but Miami Vice marked the beginning of a new chapter. Directed by Michael Mann, the film was a major disappointment despite very high expectations. After the failure of Miami Vice, the actor focused on smaller films with critically acclaimed directors such as Woody Allen (Cassandra's Dream) and Terry Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus).

With the release of Total Recall, the actor seemed ready to get back into the blockbuster business, but audiences were apparently not ready to welcome him back. So will Farrell ever be the box office draw he once was? Probably not. He's still an incredibly popular actor, but at 37, his best days as an action hero are behind him. He'll definitely be involved in future hits, but his upcoming films seem to be aiming for good reviews rather than big box office numbers.

Farrell will next be seen in the crime thriller “Solace” (alongside Anthony Hopkins), the historical film “Miss Julie” (alongside Jessica Chastain) and the dystopian love story “The Lobster” (alongside Rachel Weisz). All three are potentially good films, but not necessarily what you would call a blockbuster from a major studio.

“Winter's Tale” is now playing.
