Chinese comedy ‘Successor’ regains top spot in China’s box office charts – Xinhua

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — After being overtaken by new releases for two consecutive days, Chinese comedy “Successor” reclaimed the top spot on China's mainland box office chart on Sunday, grossing about 53.39 million yuan (about 7.47 million U.S. dollars), according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The comedy accounted for over 27 percent of total box office receipts on Sunday, with cumulative sales reaching nearly three billion yuan since its premiere on July 16.

The Chinese animation film “White Snake: Afloat”, which shot to the top of the box office charts when it was first released on Saturday, slipped to second place on Sunday, grossing 42.78 million yuan that day.

The film is based on the classic Chinese tale of the White Snake, one of the most popular folk love stories about the romance between a young man and a snake spirit who has taken on human form. The third installment in the White Snake series, this film was released on the traditional Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's Day.

The reality drama “Upstream,” which first aired on Friday, came third on Sunday with revenue of 42.34 million yuan.

Total box office revenue in mainland China on Sunday was around 192.8 million yuan.
