MPD officer witnesses a shooting outside the Frayser gas station and shoots the suspect during the chase

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis police are investigating a shooting at a gas station in Frayser that led to a chase during which an officer fired his weapon Monday night.

One of the suspects is in custody. Three others are still at large.

According to MPD, at 4:41 p.m., an officer on routine patrol witnessed a shooting in front of the EZ Express at the intersection of Frayser Boulevard and Mountain Terrace Street.

The same gas station was closed by court order last year because it was deemed a nuisance due to problems with guns, drugs and violence on the premises. It reopened a few weeks later.

“He [the officer] “I saw people firing shots in the parking lot,” said MPD Deputy Chief Don Crowe. “He drove into the parking lot to investigate and a white Ford sped away from the scene.”

This sparked a northbound chase on Mountain Terrace Street.

At least one man was injured in the shooting outside the EZ, but MPD says he refused treatment and was not taken to the hospital. Action News 5 saw paramedics on scene examining a young man wearing a security guard's shirt.

According to MPD, as the patrol officer gave chase, the Ford suddenly came to a stop just past St. Elmo Avenue and two men jumped out of the car and fled into neighboring backyards.

The Ford then drove off in an unknown direction.

“It was this group of people,” a witness told Action News 5. “They pulled up in front of the lady's house, jumped out, the police were after them and chasing them!”

For reasons still under investigation, MPD said the officer fired a single shot at one of the two fleeing suspects, who was dressed all in black.

The suspect was able to escape, so it is currently unclear whether he was hit.

“I only heard one shot,” said the young witness, “then the police came.”

The second suspect was arrested and taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition for treatment of unspecified injuries.

A firearm was also seized.

“We found a firearm near the crime scene,” Crowe said, “and we know from the original crime scene that several suspects were armed and fired shots.”

Two MPD officers sustained minor injuries during the foot pursuit and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Back on Mountain Terrace, the MPD Mobile Command Center marks the spot where another day of shootings and chaos interrupted the peace in Memphis.

“This can't be true,” the anonymous witness told Action News 5. “It feels like GTA [Grand Theft Auto]I won't even lie.”

His friend was equally stunned by the day's events, which took place so close to his home.

“That's why it's not safe,” he said. “It's not a safe environment when something like this happens every day.”

According to police, the white Ford is still missing. The model is unknown. According to MPD, the first three characters of the license plate are BRT.

According to MPD, two other men were in the Ford after the others got out. One was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants, the other was last seen wearing a white shirt and gray pants.
