Crime wave in San Fernando Valley: 2 arrests announced

An increased deployment of forces in response to the increased number of burglaries in the San Fernando Valley has led to two “significant” arrests, LAPD Acting Chief Dominic Choi announced on Tuesday.

“About a week and a half ago, two important arrests were made. The investigation revealed that these two individuals are known for their burglaries,” Choi told the city's police headquarters.

Choi added that the suspects were arrested on suspicion of burglary and robbery with firearms or other weapons. Officers also found various costume pieces, outfits and materials intended to conceal their identities, he said.

“The individual we have in custody has a significant criminal history and a history of previous burglaries and other violent crimes,” he added. “We believe this will also have a significant impact on burglaries in this area.”

Choi also highlighted the authorities' response to a sneaker theft in which one suspect was arrested but another is still being sought.

“You may also have heard that a computer store was robbed nearby shortly before. We have reason to believe – I won't go into too much detail – that the same suspects were involved in this break-in as well,” Choi said.

There have been a number of burglaries in the Encino and Tarzana areas in recent weeks. Last week, the department hosted an online public safety meeting in conjunction with City Council members Bob Blumenfield and Nithya Raman, who represent those valley neighborhoods. Choi reported that around 600 participants attended the meeting.

Choi said the Los Angeles Police Department has increased foot patrols in the area.

“We will continue our intensive efforts to restore the sense of security of these people who understandably feel completely unsafe in their homes and businesses,” Choi said. “We cannot tolerate this.”
