Fan of Sugar? This new Apple TV Plus crime series will tide you over until season two

One of the most discussed shows on Apple TV Plus this year was Sugarthe neo-noir detective novel starring Colin Farrell about a Hollywood detective trying to find a missing woman who may have been involved in something dangerous.

Fans fell in love with Sugar for its tight plot, the short episodes and the many references to classic noirs, even if the Sugar The unexpected plot twist divided viewers, and people hoped for news about Sugar Season 2 renewal. If that's you, you'll be happy to hear that Apple TV Plus has something for you while you wait.

That “something” is another new show that will scratch your itch and has just debuted. This show is called Evil Monkeyand it is another crime drama that has a lot in common with Sugar.

Evil Monkey Comedian Vince Vaughn stars as Andrew Yancy, a man who was suspended from the Florida Keys police force due to a number of bad decisions. When a severed arm is found at sea, everyone wants to write off the death as an accident, but Yancy is not convinced.

Despite being assigned as a restaurant inspector, Yancy begins the investigation, which means he must balance his personal and professional relationships with this crime in which he becomes increasingly entangled.

Evil Monkey is based on a 2013 book by Carl Hiaasen, who also wrote books that were made into films striptease And Cheering among other things.

The superficial connections between Sugar And Evil Monkey It's clear: both are crime novels. But there's a lot more that makes them seem quite similar.

Take the presentation, for example: in both shows, each episode seems to last about a day, starting with the character waking up and ending with them falling asleep (of course, there are exceptions). Both also have a narrator, with Sugar recounting his own adventures and one of Yancy's friends recounting his.

On a deeper level, both stories are very closely tied to their setting, more so than most crime novels I have seen recently: Sugar is about Los Angeles and Evil Monkey is about the Florida Keys. You get an insight into the people, crimes and communities of the place and how they relate to the case.

And private investigators John Sugar and Andrew Yancy both seem to be more morally upright heroes than most morally questionable detectives you see these days. Sugar helps homeless people get back on their feet, while Yancy pesters his partner to drive better and deals with restaurant and architectural code violations. That makes them more interesting protagonists than the endless and boring similarly perceived characters who live in a morally gray area and all feel the same.

I have only seen a few episodes of Evil Monkey at the time of writing (two episodes debuted on Wednesday, August 14th and new episodes are coming weekly through mid-October), so I can't yet say if we'll see as dramatic a mid-season twist as Sugar's. But if it was the crime and investigation aspects of that West Coast series that drew you in, then this East Coast alternative will give you more of what you love.
