“In the early morning hours, approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, the Sheriff's Communications Center received a 911 call from a homeless man in his 60s who reported that he had been stabbed in the face near El Camino Avenue and Howe Avenue in Sacramento. North Patrol officers arrived at the scene and discovered a second victim, a man in his 30s, unconscious on the ground, also suffering from a stab wound to the face. Officers administered life-saving first aid and were able to resuscitate him. Both victims were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Detectives from the Sheriff's Crimes Against Persons Bureau and Crime Scene Investigators arrived on the scene, began their investigation, interviewed witnesses, and began collecting evidence. Unfortunately, the second victim (the man in his 30s) succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital on Tuesday, August 6. Sheriff's Homicide Detectives then took over the investigation. Detectives were able to identify the suspect as Kyrie Woods-Richardson. They learned that Woods-Richardson stabbed both victims with a knife and fled the scene. Detectives learned that he had recently been released from prison and was on parole. Wood-Richardson had also previously been identified as a gang member.

Detectives with the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau located Woods-Richardson last night in the Sacramento area, where he was taken into custody without incident. He has since been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on PC 187 (Murder) where he remains non-bailable. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 12.
The first victim (the man in his 60s) is expected to survive.”
