According to friends who knew the couple, she was happily married to the man of her dreams and the couple was expecting their first child.

Police later said they found it odd that Scott took so long to report her disappearance, pausing to shower and eat pizza before picking up the phone to call for help.

He told investigators that he did not know what happened to his wife, who was eight months pregnant, and that he was fishing about 90 miles away at the time of her disappearance.

Dozens of people participated in the search for traces of Laci near her home in Modesto, California – about 90 miles east of San Jose – but to no avail.

Only months later did an unexpected natural event lead to a dark turn in the case.

Thanks to two new documentaries, the gruesome case is now back in the spotlight, twenty years after Laci's murderer was convicted.

Netflix's “American Murder: Laci Peterson” premieres Wednesday, giving viewers more details about Laci's life and family from the people who loved her most.

Peacock's “Face to Face with Scott Peterson” includes a rare interview with Scott and more details about why he is trying to overturn his conviction.

ANSWERS WASHED Ashore

In mid-April 2003, a severe storm swept across San Francisco Bay, bringing with it strong currents and large waves that churned up the sea floor.

The turbulent waters also washed two bodies ashore, as this clip from ABC News shows.

According to USA Today, on April 13, 2003, a dog owner first found the mutilated body of a male fetus between the rocks on San Francisco Bay.

The next That same day, another pedestrian found the mutilated body of an adult just a few miles away on the shore near Berkeley Marina.

Scott had told investigators that he had been fishing on the day Lacie disappeared – at the same spot where the adult's body later washed up.

The body was barely recognizable and was reportedly missing its head and several limbs.

According to ABC News, a leaked copy of the autopsy also allegedly showed that a plastic band was wrapped around the fetus's neck.

A PRIME SUSPECT

According to police, Scott became the prime suspect during the investigation, but without bodies, prosecution would be difficult.

One of Scott's lovers, Amber Frey, called police to report their relationship and assist the investigation after learning that the man she had been dating, who had told her he was a widower, was in fact suspected of murder.

When DNA analysis on April 18 confirmed that the bodies were indeed Laci and Connor – the name the couple wanted to give their child – police arrested Scott for murder that same day.

Authorities said when they found him, he had dyed his hair from dark brown to blonde and was traveling nearby The Jolla with $15,000 in cash, four cell phones, two driver's licenses and other suspicious items.

Scott was eventually tried and found guilty of the double murder of Laci and her child in November 2004.

He was sentenced to death for his crimes, but the sentence was later overturned and commuted to life imprisonment when it was found that the jury had been improperly selected, in part because of its support for the death penalty.

The convicted killer has never admitted to killing Laci or their child. His defense argues that a burglar broke into their home and killed them.

“I didn’t kill my family”

Scott's request for a retrial in 2022 was denied, but he did not give up his innocence.
