Florida man allegedly killed another driver in dispute over disabled parking space: “Your day will come”

A Florida man has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting another motorist during a dispute over a handicapped parking space, shortly after the driver told him, “Your day will come.”

Richard Minor, 66, reacted “agitated and confrontational” after Jonathan Lee Arias, his wife and her friend arrived at the Hart's Landing fishing pier in Sarasota and parked their car.

Minor – a left leg amputee – questioned whether Arias was disabled, according to the arrest affidavit he obtained. Law and Crime. Further back and forth between the two men ended with Arias being sprayed with bear spray and then shot, the report said.

The incident occurred on August 3 shortly after 2:30 p.m. According to the affidavit, after their initial exchange, Minor continued to “provoke Arias from a distance.” After 15 minutes of alleged harassment by Minor, Arias and his companions packed up their fishing equipment and left.

Arias started to drive off, but went in the wrong direction, which prompted Minor to “humiliate” Arias, per Law and Crimewhereupon he got out of his car and walked to Minor's passenger door.

According to the affidavit, Arias asked, “What's your problem?” to which Minor replied, “I'll show you my problem.” Arias allegedly asked if Minor had “mental issues,” and Minor replied, “Your day will come.”

According to the affidavit, Minor then sprayed bear spray at Arias through the open window. The victim then walked toward the driver's door when Minor allegedly “fired several shots at Arias.”

According to police, witnesses said Minor fired about seven or eight shots.

Arias' wife and friend ran to help him, but Minor allegedly pointed a gun at both of them and told Arias' wife, “Get out of my face, bitch.”

When Sarasota Police officers arrived at the scene, they found Arias on the ground and Minor in his car with his hands on the steering wheel and a gun to his right leg. Arias was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Minor reportedly told police that he had been drinking and that people often park illegally in handicapped spaces. He added that after questioning him, Arias told him, “I'm going to take you down.”

Minor was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He pleaded not guilty and is being held in the Sarasota County Jail without bail, according to court records.

His next court date is scheduled for September 13.
