Former NASCAR champion Kurt Busch arrested for drunk driving

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV/Gray News) – Former NASCAR driver and champion Kurt Busch was arrested Tuesday night in Iredell County, North Carolina, for driving under the influence, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

NCSHP states they were called around 11:40 p.m. to assist the Iredell County Sheriff's Office with a traffic stop at the intersection of Brawley School Road and Chuckwood Road.

Officers said Busch was stopped for speeding, going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone, reckless driving and suspicion of impaired driving.

A police officer arrived at the scene and conducted a roadside test, which determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Busch was arrested and taken to the Iredell County Jail, where he took a breathalyzer test, which revealed a breath alcohol concentration of 0.17. He was brought before a judge and signed a written promise to appear in court.

He was charged by the NCSHP with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office dealt with additional charges of speeding and reckless driving.

His first court date is scheduled for September 19 in Mooresville.

Busch was the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion and winner of the 2017 Daytona 500. He most recently competed full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2022.
