Double trouble: The paths of Max Muncys of the Dodgers and the Athletics finally cross

Worlds collided on Tuesday when Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Max Muncy faced Oakland Athletics shortstop Max Muncy in a long-awaited meeting.

Not only do the two players have the same name and profession, but they were both born on August 25th and drafted by the Athletics – nine years apart.

Muncy of the Dodgers was drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Draft, while Muncy of the Athletics was selected in the first round in 2021.

The Muncys, who are not related, posed together for a photo before a minor league game between the Oklahoma City Baseball Club, the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, and the Las Vegas Aviators, the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate.

“It's been great,” Muncy told MLB.com from Las Vegas. “Obviously, it's been a long time coming. … Of course, I'm from LA, so I hear from him all the time and I get questions all the time.”

The Dodgers third baseman has been rehabbing a strained right oblique since May 15. The younger Muncy is Oakland's No. 8 prospect and went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs in a 10-8 loss, while the older Muncy went 1-for-5.

Tuesday's meeting was the first time the two have faced each other on the field. The series between the Muncys continues through Sunday, their only meetings of the season.
