Local leaders team up with Lansing Community College to create jobs in an emerging field of electrical engineering.

“We have launched many programs,” said education coordinator Samuel Krease.

Ingham County Jail officials are implementing a new program for their inmates.

“Electric vehicles are a growing market,” said Krease.

A partnership with Lansing Community College to offer a self-directed course in prison.

“Inmates are one of the groups we have always wanted to help,” says Lee Gardner, director of vocational training at LCC.

It is expected that the electrical industry will bring more jobs to our districts in the coming years.

“Thousands and thousands of jobs are being created in our region,” Gardner said.

Now it will also help give inmates a chance to succeed after their release. More than 100 inmates have already signed up for the program, which will run through December. If inmates don't complete the course on time, they can take it after their release.

“They get the CLA certificate, they become a certified logistics associate, a certificate that they can use for a wide range of factory jobs,” Krease said.

Ultimately, Gardner says, prisoners are one of the populations they may not always consider, but everyone should have a chance to succeed.

“They are no different than anyone else and this program really offers them a great opportunity,” Gardner said.

The program will continue every year until 2026.
