A group of industry leaders was commissioned to create a master plan and design as part of the Indiana State Prison redevelopment strategy.

Following an announcement by the Indiana Department of Corrections last August, the community was informed that the Michigan City prison would close following the completion of a new 4,200-bed facility on the Westville Correctional Facility campus that will replace both facilities.

A team of experts from the fields of architecture, urban design, transportation, planning and housing will work to develop plans for the redevelopment of the Indiana State Penitentiary site.

In addition to the analysis and research components, the team will meet with community members and hold public workshops to brainstorm and develop a final plan. Officials say they plan to involve as many people as possible, both in person and virtually.
