Independence Day 2024: Triptii Dimri wants freedom from judgement on this I-Day

Triptii Dimri's excitement for Independence Day stems not only from the nostalgia it evokes, but also from the prospect of a better tomorrow. In an exclusive shoot with HT City, the actor says the day “comes with a sense of fulfilment”.

As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day today, Triptii says independence means “living your life the way you want to”. “I am glad that people can express themselves through social media and other media, that they can voice their opinions; that is independence for me. You can say what you want and live the life you want without thinking about what others would say about your choices,” explains the actor, who recently appeared in Bad Newz.

Triptii, who has been called India's “national crush,” notes that India's young guns are “so well informed and educated.” “The young people of today have strong opinions and have something to say about everything. This is important because the young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow. I am glad that they take their voices seriously and are not afraid to raise them when needed. They believe that what they say matters, is important and creates change – and it does,” she adds.

What does she hope people will be free from? “Fear of judgement,” the 30-year-old replies. “For me, it's also a very personal thing because I'm afraid of being judged by others. That's true for a lot of people, but I would like to add that if you follow your heart and do things the way you want, there's nothing to be afraid of,” she says, adding: “I have to think twice before posting something on social media because I don't know how people will perceive it. That's why I want to be free from judgement. Everyone has the right to express their opinion, but sometimes it breaks your heart when you post something and it's taken the wrong way. You can't explain everything to everyone.”

The Laila Majnu (2018) and Animal (2023) actress talks about how she celebrates Independence Day. Triptii says, “When I am at home, I watch the celebrations, flag hoisting and patriotic performances on TV. We also wait for the Prime Minister's speech at the Red Fort,” she tells us, adding that she has “wonderful memories” of celebrating I-Day in her childhood. “I still feel the same excitement [about I-Day] I had one as a child. Every year there were many cultural events at our school in which everyone participated, won prizes and went home with treats. At home my father was the head of our [residential] Society in Air India Colony, Vasant Vihar, Delhi. He organized events with themes and games for every age group. Now that we have moved out, [fondly] “I remember the celebrations where we felt like part of the community. They put a smile on my face. That is something I still miss today,” concludes Triptii.
