The New York Giants released cornerback Jalen Mills on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Giants placed Mills on the non-football injured list in July because he was unable to practice with the team in training camp due to a calf injury.

Jalen Mills never took the field in training camp. It was never clear what role the Giants even had in mind for him. Maybe that was one of the reasons he was released. They have a lot of nickel DBs. https://t.co/yUCpJxrZ3u

On Tuesday, head coach Brian Daboll struck an optimistic tone when asked about Mills' status.

Schefter reported that Mills is “now healthy and should attract interest.”

The 30-year-old spent his first five seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the New England Patriots in 2021. In 17 appearances for New England in 2023, he had 45 tackles and one pass defense.

At the very least, Mills seemed like a solid addition to a secondary that lost Xavier McKinney to free agent. He could play cornerback or fill the void left by McKinney at safety.

Instead, the Giants seem content to rely on youth to build their pass defense.

Deonte Banks, Cor'Dale Flott, Dru Phillips, Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock occupy the five starting spots in New York's second team unofficial depth chartPhillips was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, while Pinnock is the most experienced player despite only turning 25 in June.

From the outside, it looks as if management is fully committed to a restructuring in 2024.
