Virginia mother and boyfriend charged with murder of two-year-old

A mother and a 27-year-old man from Virginia have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a two-year-old child.

On Tuesday, August 13, at around 3 a.m. local time, police and emergency services responded to a 911 call that a child was unresponsive in Petersburg, Virginia, the Petersburg Bureau of Police said in a statement on Facebook.

The toddler was taken to the hospital, where he later died. In a criminal complaint obtained by local station WWBT, police said blood was coming from the child's nose and mouth when they found him.

Sadia Dewese, 29, and Jaytrez Mason, 27, were arrested and both charged with murder and child neglect, while Mason is additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a violent felon, according to police.

Dewese and Mason are both being held without bail. It is not immediately clear whether either of them has hired a lawyer or made a confession.

The child, who was identified by police only as a boy, died of blunt force trauma to the head, WWBT reported, citing the criminal complaint.

Both WWBT and WTVR reported that DeWese and Mason were a couple.

PEOPLE reached out to the Petersburg Police Department for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
