UPDATE Police: Shooter not in custody; ambulance transports shooting victim from scene | News

SUNBURY – Emergency crews transported a person from the scene of a shooting near the Northumberland County Courthouse Thursday afternoon, more than 30 minutes after the incident occurred.

Police confirmed at 1 p.m., an hour after the shooting, that the shooter was not in custody.

Police have secured the crime scene behind the First National Bank and Weis Markets. Emergency crews and firefighters have closed streets near the courthouse, including Second Street.

A heavy police presence is on site. Officers from across the region, including state police, have cordoned off the area around the courthouse. Market Street remains open.

Thursday was the first day of an attempted murder trial at the courthouse. District Attorney Michael O'Donnell said the trial, which is linked to a fatal 2022 shooting in the city, has been postponed.

O'Donnell said the attempted murder trial of Anthony Moultrie and Franky Riche, which began Thursday, was ruled a mistrial because of the shooting. Both are charged with attempted murder stemming from an incident in May 2022 that is related to a murder that occurred a month earlier.

Thursday's shooting occurred shortly after the trial's lunch break. The courthouse is on lockdown.

Before the ambulance left for the hospital, a crowd gathered at the scene of the accident and appeared to gather for prayer while police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

This is a developing story. More details will be released as they become available.
