Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley fight for control of the same body in a bloody new trailer

Revenge Director Coralie Fargeat’s new body horror satire, The substancewas shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May and received extremely positive – and more than a little shocking – initial reactions (see below). After a few short teasers, the full trailer has finally been released online.

The film centers on a celebrated actress who becomes the prominent host of a daytime fitness show (Demi Moore) and is replaced by a younger star, leading to a confrontation between the two women that eventually turns violent.

Specific plot details have been kept secret, but this trailer seems to confirm recent reports about the film's sci-fi twist.

It appears that Moore's character, Elizabeth Sparkle, uses a secret cloning process and the titular substance called Activator to create a younger, more perfect version of herself, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley.

From what we see here, they both agree to share the spotlight as completely different people – however, there seem to be some rules that must be followed!

The substance is said to contain some pretty bloody scenes, but the scene that has caused the most discussion is a brutal fight between Moore and Qualley's characters – including explicit full-frontal nudity.

“I had a great partner,” Moore said in a recent interview about her co-star. “We were obviously quite close at times… and naked. But there was also a lightness [in shooting those scenes].”

Moore also noted that the film “pushed me out of my comfort zone”, but she felt that the nudity “was necessary to tell this story” and that Fargeat approached the scenes “Create a common basis of mutual trust with great sensitivity.”
