Shooting on Barwick Street in Sumter: One person injured, teenager charged

The victim was taken to a hospital in Columbia and was stable, at least after checking in. The victim's exact condition was not known to police.

SUMTER, SC – A 15-year-old has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting in Sumter Wednesday afternoon.

According to Sumter police, the shooting occurred around 2:45 p.m. Officers were called to Ash Street, where they found an 18-year-old shooting victim. Investigators learned the victim was parked in front of a home on Barwick Street when someone shot at his vehicle. Police said he tried to drive away but crashed and then ran onto Ash Street.

According to police, the 15-year-old suspect fled the scene on Barwick Street, but was soon found by officers and taken into custody. The juvenile suspect was arrested by the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a handgun by a person under 18, and discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.

Police are still investigating the shooting and said the victim was in stable condition Thursday morning, but his exact condition was unknown. However, authorities confirmed he was flown to a Columbia hospital for treatment.
