Driver of red Chevy Camaro with racing stripes charged in fatal hit-and-run in Imperial Beach – NBC 7 San Diego

A man is in custody Thursday following a fatal hit-and-run accident in Imperial Beach.

The Imperial Beach Sheriff's Field Office responded to a 911 call about a traffic collision between a car and a pedestrian just before 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Connecticut Street, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

When officers arrived, they found a woman on the ground who had been hit by a car. Paramedics treated the woman, but she did not survive.

According to the sheriff's statement, officers learned that a red Chevrolet Camaro with black racing stripes that had left the area was believed to be involved in the accident.

A sheriff's ASTREA helicopter was called and assisted officers in locating the suspect vehicle in the 700 block of Oneonta Avenue.

Eric Cox, 62, was identified as the owner and driver of the Camaro. Cox was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on charges of manslaughter, driving while intoxicated causing personal injury and hit-and-run causing serious bodily injury or death, the statement said. His city of residence was not listed.

According to jail records, Cox is due in South Division Court in Chula Vista on Friday. He is not eligible for release.

The coroner's office will identify the woman and determine the cause and manner of death until her family has been notified.
