Northbrook man denied bail in court after fatal Mother's Day accident

A Northbrook man accused of causing a car crash on Mother's Day that killed a Glenbrook South High School 12th-grader has been denied pretrial release.

The court's verdict against 21-year-old Taeyoung Kim was handed down on Thursday. He will remain in custody until his next court date on August 27.

Kim is accused of speeding and causing the accident that killed 17-year-old Marko Niketic. He is charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent homicide and several traffic violations.

On May 18, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors allege Kim had alcohol and marijuana in his system when his car ran a red light while driving from downtown Chicago to Glenview.

Although the speed limit on Lake Avenue is 35 miles per hour, Kim's vehicle was reportedly traveling 131 miles per hour immediately prior to the accident.

Niketic was turning left when his vehicle collided with Kim's. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
