Portland man continues to fight to keep his parents' house

Darryl Crabtree has cognitive problems and is facing eviction if he cannot pay off family members. The community has come together to help him.

PORTLAND, Maine – We have an update to a story we brought you in July about a Portland man fighting to keep his parents' home.

Darryl Crabtree, 60, has cognitive problems and cared for his elderly parents in their Maine Avenue home for years until both died.

In May, he was told he would be evicted if he did not pay off other family members.

A GoFundMe campaign raised over $30,000.

Darryl has also secured a loan, but it may not be enough to purchase the home, especially at the current market value.

“It's their house, not mine, even if I buy it. It's their house. I'm just the caretaker,” Darryl said.

Community members, from neighbors to strangers on the internet, have pulled together and helped support him in his attempt to keep the house.

“If we keep spreading the word and moving him forward, everyone will achieve their goal and he can stay in his home,” said Alicia Menard, Darryl's neighbor.

A hearing on the eviction issue is scheduled for next Thursday in Portland.
