Dak Prescott “confident” that the extension can be reached

OXNARD, California — It's been just over three weeks since the Dallas Cowboys arrived in Southern California, and while Dak Prescott's contract extension negotiations have been a challenging affair, the CeeDee Lamb situation has made the bigger headlines.

As a result, Dak Prescott was able to update the media on Thursday on the latest developments in his negotiations for the first time since earlier this month. Since then, Prescott's representatives and the Cowboys' front office have agreed to trade deals, although Prescott has largely stayed out of the back-and-forth.

“I have somebody handling it,” Prescott said. “I haven't put too much thought into whether it gets done now, whether it gets done in a few weeks, during the season, whenever it happens. I just know the conversations are going in the right direction.”

According to league projections, Prescott is expected to dominate the market at the quarterback position with an average annual salary of at least $60 million. He will enter the final season of his contract in 2024, with a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag clause for 2025 and beyond.

“There are good talks going on, that's all I can say,” he said. “Call it negotiations, talks, there are a lot of good things going on. There is a lot of trust. As I have said every time I have spoken about it, I have a lot of trust in my [representation] And [the Cowboys] something to do.”

While he stays out of the day-to-day conversations surrounding his negotiations, he said his representative will keep him updated. “Depends on how good it is,” he said with a smile.

Prescott is entering his ninth season as the Cowboys' starting quarterback and is poised to make franchise history. With 4,724 yards and 46 touchdowns, he will match Tony Romo's club records that once seemed insurmountable for the young 2016 fourth-round pick.

Despite his confidence in getting a deal done, Prescott also stresses that, ultimately, it's a business. It could be some time before that record book is rewritten in the hands of No. 4. But Prescott is only worried about the now.

“If it happens, it happens,” he said. “Honestly, it's the business… I'm really happy where I am right now and that's my focus. I enjoy being a Cowboy, a thousand percent. I enjoy living in Dallas. I enjoy everything about it, but this is a business. The talks are going well, but I'm grateful to be where I am right now.”
