Suspect in custody, 1 victim in hospital

A Lorimor man was arrested Thursday afternoon following a shooting in Creston that left one man seriously injured and put a hospital and several schools on lockdown. Shortly after 7:30 a.m. Thursday, a shooting was reported in the 800 block of North Lincoln Street in Creston. The hospital, Greater Regional Health, notified the Union County Sheriff's Office around that time that a man had arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound. According to a Facebook post from the hospital, the facility was placed on lockdown at 8 a.m. on the advice of police. The center said there was no threat to staff, patients or visitors at the time and police believed it was an isolated incident. Shortly after 10 a.m., Creston police confirmed a suspect was taken into custody. According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the suspect, 22-year-old Daniel McDowell of Lorimor, was officially arrested and charged with the incident around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. McDowell is charged with attempted murder and probation violation. He is being held in the Union County Jail.According to court documents, McDowell's girlfriend told authorities that Nathan Novotny was driving a black Dodge Charger and was following McDowell and his girlfriend in a red GMC Envoy when McDowell pulled into the parking lot of an apartment building in the 800 block of North Lincoln Street. When McDowell pulled his vehicle into a parking lot, the girlfriend told police, Novotny blocked the car into the parking lot. The girlfriend told police that Novotny was sitting in his car when McDowell allegedly fired three shots from his handgun, hitting Novotny. McDowell fled the scene and allegedly threw the gun to an unknown location.Creston schools were also placed on lockdown, according to a post shortly after 9 a.m.Southwestern Community College says the entire campus was placed on lockdown following a shooting “in the northwest part of Creston.” Lockdowns at Creston schools and Southwestern Community College were both lifted around 10 a.m.KCCI is working to find out more.
