Yankees' Jose Trevino returns from the injured list to his new role as a backup

The Yankees will have a new catcher and bullpen player when their series begins in Detroit on Friday.

On Thursday, the Yankees recalled catcher Jose Trevino from his rehab assignment and placed him back on the 10-day injured list.

Trevino missed more than a month with a strained left quadriceps, an injury sustained while he and Austin Wells shared time behind the plate.

Trevino will essentially return as a backup, as manager Aaron Boone said last week that Wells, who has established himself as the club's cleanup hitter, “will likely get a lot of playing time.”

Before his July 12th injury, Trevino had an OPS of .713 and is considered an excellent defensive catcher.

Wells has an OPS of .773 and continues to appear confident against major league pitchers.

One of the two will have to catch a new pitcher after Will Warren was optioned following his spot start on Wednesday, leaving a hole in a disappointing bullpen.

The Yankees have a group of pitchers rehabbing in the minor leagues, with Scott Effross and Nick Burdi being the two most likely to be called up.

Effross, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and required back surgery last December, has been building his career in the minor leagues since June 19, trying to prove himself worthy of a call-up.

The right-hander's results have improved recently, having allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in his last eight innings with SWB.

“I think he's definitely throwing the ball better, which is encouraging,” Boone said Monday. “I feel like we're bringing more guys on the team to have good options. So yeah, Scotty has had some good performances in a row here, so he's definitely in the running and will be considered.”

Burdi, who has been out since May 23 due to inflammation of his right hip, is also in the game. The strong right-hander allowed two runs in 5 ²/₃ innings with seven strikeouts and had two runs as SWB.

Lou Trivino (Tommy John surgery) and Ian Hamilton (right latissimus strain) are a little further back.

In Detroit, the Yankees will reportedly get to know one of their former top talents up close.

Trey Sweeney, a first-round pick of the Yankees in 2021, will make his Tigers debut, according to ESPN.

Sweeney was traded to the Dodgers last offseason in exchange for Victor Gonzalez and Jorbit Vivas.

Los Angeles traded the shortstop to the Tigers at the trade deadline in exchange for Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers.

The MLB has released its spring 2025 training schedule, which includes 33 Yankees games (16 home games and 17 away games).

The Yankees' Grapefruit League season begins on February 21 against the Rays and ends on March 24 in Port St. Lucie against the Mets.
