Unexpected leak leads to early closure of part of Gardner Aquatic Center for the season

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Summer is ending early for part of a Johnson County attraction.

The Gardner Aquatic Center announced that the splash pad, lazy river and slide area will remain closed for the remainder of the season. According to Gardner Parks and Recreation, the early closure was necessary due to a significant leak in the Aquatic Center.

The large diving pool and the large swimming pool will remain open on weekends until September 2nd.

Due to changes in the Aquatic Center's offerings, the Parks and Recreation Department has reduced the admission price to $6 per person.

Anyone who goes to the pool on Saturday, August 24th will receive a free treat voucher from Dip N' Dots.

In a response to a resident's question on Facebook, Gardner Parts and Recreation said water leaks are common at all public pools. The department said small leaks that are easily accessible are isolated so the facility can remain open.

The latest leak is underground and requires draining the lazy river side of the center. Excavation is also required to reach and repair the leak.
