“Jana Gana Mana” is the national anthem of India and was originally composed in Bengali by the poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Also on August 15, the Nobel Prize Foundation published a handwritten translation of the Indian national anthem by Rabindranath Tagore.

The translated version, entitled The Morning Song of India, states: “You are the ruler of the minds of all men, you determine India's destiny. Your name awakens the hearts of the Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat and Maratha, the Dravida, Orissa and Bengal. It echoes in the mountains of the Vindhyas and the Himalayas, mixes with the music of the Yamuna and the Ganges, and is sung by the waves of the Indian Ocean. They pray for your blessings and sing your praises. The salvation of all men is in your hands, you determine India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to you!”

India's first Nobel Prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore, originally composed the anthem in Bengali on December 11, 1911, under the title “Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata.” The first of the song's five verses was adopted as the national anthem by the Constituent Assembly of India on January 24, 1950.

The members of the Indian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 1947 recorded “Jana Gana Mana” as the country’s national anthem.
