Colin Cowherd warns Mauricio Pochettino after accepting job with US men's soccer team

Colin Cowherd: “So the U.S. Men's National Team has hired its next coach – Mauricio Pochettino. He's taken Tottenham to the Champions League final, he's coached high-level teams, he's very good at developing young players, he's responsible, he gets some of the credit for Harry Kane's development into a star… Welcome to Team USA. About 60% of the resources and 95% of the expectations. Here's your Team USA puffer jacket – good luck.

Let me give you a taste of what's going to happen and what to expect, Mauricio… I wish you the very best. This is the only team in the country I cheer for and I don't care if I'm a journalist or not. You get blamed for ALL losses. It's never the players. The players are NEVER blamed. It's ALWAYS the coach. Gregg Berhalter has won almost 70% of his games. There's a lot of politics in our football. It's very territorial and there are landmines everywhere. You have to develop toughness and culture, both more than we've ever had. Many of our players thrive abroad but we have no grit. Did I mention you get blamed for ALL losses and usually draws too?? You then have to cobble all that together pretty quickly, build culture, grit and chemistry – we're hosting the next World Cup. I'm not saying it's delusional but our expectations throughout my life are about twelve places above reality in the rankings.

Your main opponent will be young soccer fans on the internet. They will learn very quickly that they know a lot more than you. They are stupid and they are brilliant even though they didn't make the in-house soccer team. Players are not held accountable. When Gregg Berhalter tried that with a player, he was basically on the wrong side of employment. It just doesn't work that way. You will have your greatest influence now because at some point you will be blamed for not winning the World Cup. Be tough on players and create a culture. We had more talent than ever, but what are we? Are we tough? No, we don't have Clint Dempsey anymore. We are just talented. You have an early advantage – use every ounce of it. Hold players accountable. Blame THEM for shortcomings. We blame hockey players, football players, basketball players, but we never blame soccer players.

Here's the good news. It's not a demolition, it's a renovation. They're skilled and the foundation is actually pretty damn strong.”
