WAIANAE, Hawaii (Island News) – New details have emerged about a fatal police-involved shooting in Waianae Wednesday night.

Police say the shooting began around 6 p.m. Wednesday with an argument between the suspect and his girlfriend. The suspect was identified as Alston Kaipo Awong.

During the argument, Awong pointed a gun at his girlfriend, but it didn't fire, so he went back into his house and pulled out a pistol.

Island News obtained surveillance footage of the shooting.

The video appears to show Awong walking toward a house on Puhinalo Place. At around 6:14 p.m., according to HPD, Awong's girlfriend ran toward her relative's house and Awong followed her, firing the pistol four times.

Officers arrived shortly afterward and heard screaming coming from inside. They walked around the back of the house and saw Awong standing behind a broken glass door.

According to HPD, officers repeatedly asked him to put down the weapon.

“Instead of putting the weapon down, the man flipped it over or pulled the slide back and let it slide forward. At that point, the officer fired two shots at the suspect. The man fell to the ground and the officer admitted to providing first aid until paramedics arrived,” HPD Chief Joe Logan said during a[pressconferenceonThursday[PressekonferenzamDonnerstag[pressconferenceonThursday

According to HPD, Awong has been convicted 14 times, including 11 for a crime.

“The investigation so far has revealed that the pistol used by the suspect at home was stolen and the rifle appears to be homemade,” Logan said. “It is always tragic when a life is taken. However, we are extremely thankful that the three people shot are expected to recover and none of our officers were injured.”

The officer who opened fire was placed on leave pending the investigation.

The three people mentioned by HPD were all injured by Awong.

According to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS), two women in their 30s and a 25-year-old man suffered serious gunshot wounds.

According to HPD, a woman in her 70s also suffered injuries from an attack.

Police told Island News they were initially called to the scene because of an argument between Awong and his girlfriend. In the past two years, they have been called to Puhinalo Place twice because of terrorist threatening phone calls.
