A Peruvian gang leader was arrested by U.S. immigration officials in New York on Wednesday, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Thursday.

Department of Homeland Security investigators notified ICE's Buffalo field office last month that the man, Gianfranco Torres-Navarro, 38, was wanted in Peru, the agency said.

According to ICE, Torres-Navarro was transferred to the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, to await immigration proceedings.

No legal representative for Torres-Navarro was listed in ICE's online detainee directory.

“Gianfranco Torres-Navarro poses a significant threat to our communities and we will not allow New York to become a safe haven for dangerous non-citizens,” Thomas Brophy, director of ICE’s Buffalo field office, said in a statement.

The US agency did not disclose why Torres-Navarro is wanted in Peru. In the Peruvian media he is known as Gianfranco 23, in reference to alleged victims.

According to Peruvian media, he fled to the United States after allegedly killing a retired police officer.

According to ICE, Torres-Navarro entered the United States on May 16 in or near Roma, Texas, where he was arrested and summoned for immigration proceedings.
