Former Barrow deputy sheriff arrested by GBI for putting pepper spray in inmates' food – WSB-TV Channel 2

WINDER, Georgia – A 50-year-old Winder, Georgia woman was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on charges of cruelty to inmates in the county jail and violation of her oath of office.

According to the GBI, Lolita Lightner, a jailer with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, was investigated following an incident on July 21.

The Sheriff's Office asked the GBI to investigate after several inmates at the Barrow County Jail were impaired by what was believed to be pepper spray that was intentionally mixed into their food.

Lightner was responsible for caring for the inmates at the time.

The GBI said that at this stage of the investigation, they believe Lightner acted alone. The former prison guard was arrested without incident and booked into the Barrow County Jail.

Channel 2 Action News has reached out to the Barrow County Sheriff for comment and is awaiting a response.
