Rodri misses Manchester City's Premier League opener at Chelsea due to injury

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Rodri will miss Manchester City's Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday.

Guardiola also announced that winger Oscar Bobb will undergo surgery on a broken leg on Friday afternoon, with City expecting him to be fit to play within “three to four months”.

Rodri only returned to training on Wednesday after helping Spain beat England in the European Championship final, a match in which he sustained a thigh injury. Guardiola says there is “no chance” of him being in the squad that travels to London this weekend.

“He hasn't trained, I haven't seen him yet,” said the City manager. “He looks good, but we'll see how he is when he starts moving his body.”

Bobb, who seemed ready for the start of the season after an impressive preseason, suffered an unfortunate fall during training during the week.

“Hopefully he is well and will be back as soon as possible in three to four months,” said Guardiola.

“We are so sad for him, not because he had an incredible pre-season, that doesn't matter, if the injury is long-term, it is a problem.

“We look forward to seeing him again as soon as possible.”

Guardiola also confirmed that City had no offers for Joao Cancelo, who has spent the last 18 months on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

“In training we say 'hello', we talk and train,” he added. “That's all. What will happen depends on his agent and the club. And if in the end he has to stay, we will treat him like all the other players since I've been here.”
