Jazz Chisholm injury update: Possible timetable for Yankees star's return announced

New York Yankees star infielder Jazz Chisholm is currently on the injured list after suffering a UCL injury earlier this week.

After further tests and obtaining several opinions, it appears that the 26-year-old left-hander will avoid surgery for now in the hopes of a return in September.

According to Greg Joyce and Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the current recommendation for Chisholm is to rest and rehab rather than go under the knife.

“After the Yankees consulted with several doctors about their new third baseman's UCL injury, Chisholm was recommended to rest and rehab instead of surgery, The Post's Jon Heyman confirmed Friday,” Joyce wrote. “The club is confident Chisholm will be able to return to play this season, likely in September.”

While the Yankees are not out of the woods yet, this seems to be a more hopeful outcome in terms of Chisholm's suitability for a possible playoff appearance.

Chisholm was diagnosed with what the Yankees called a sprained left elbow, which he sustained while jumping to home base during Monday night's 12-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

The injury is said to have occurred after White Sox catcher Korey Lee touched Chisholm's outstretched elbow during a play at the plate.

Despite playing in only 14 games, Chisholm proved to be an electrifying addition to the Yankees' starting lineup, bringing a much-needed level of energy, speed and power that had been missing over the past two months.

In the 14 games since being signed shortly before the trade deadline, Chisholm posted a batting average of .316/.361/.702 with an OPS+ of 189, seven home runs, 11 RBIs and five stolen bases in 61 at-bats.

With Chisholm out for at least the next few weeks, the Yankees will rely on a combination of Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza at third base.
